Which is the most energy efficient way to bring water to the boil for boiling veg?

I have the following choices: Cold tap water in the kettle, cold tap water straight in the pan, hot tap water heated by the boiler in the kettle or hot tap water heated by the boiler straight into the pan. Sorry its a bit long winded but I boil veg nearly every day and want to be as ‘green’ as possible whilst I do it!

Start with hot water from the tap and put to boil in the pot with the lid on for faster boiling

I think hot tap water into the pan would be best BUT if you boil veg everyday you could look at buying one of those electric steamers. I don’t know its so but as they use less water it should take less energy to heat.

Hot tap water straight into the pan. Be sure and put a lid on the pan. Don’t ask me why but the water will boil more auickly if you do.

ADD A DASH OF SALT TO THE WATER PRIOR TO BOILING. THIS MAKES THE WATER BOIL FASTER.

Hot tap water into the kettle and you have a jum start on heating up from cold and therefore your are as energy efficient green as you could possibly be. Another way would be to heat up hot tap water in your microwave but microwave ovens are generally too small to heat up a large quantity of cooking water.

If you’re using around 2 pints of water measure it in the pan first then put in in an electric kettle. it’ll boil in a couple of minutes then pour it straight back in the pan which should be then put on the heat with the veg and any salt added then.
